note that the female’s mask is rather abbreviated.
The male has a more extensive mask. Note that he also seems to be brighter and more colorful than the female. The “cedar” coloring is more extensive on the male than on the female. He also has a darker chin patch.
Good luck in the field though.
It looks like the male is on the left, and the female on the right because of the dark chin patch. I agree with Lynne and Linda, they do like they are wearing very cool sunglasses.
Easy! The right one must be the female! She’s wearing the bling!
Seriously? I really wouldn’t know and would have to look it up. But that would be cheating – so I plead no contest!
Cheers, Klaus
Male, left – more colour, darker chin patch
Female, right – more buff colour, less chin patch
Both male and female sport the black eye “mask”
Hard to tell them apart in flocks
Welcome everyone to the birdQUIZ blog that will help you with your bird identification skills. Feel free to use any kind of reference you have available for your identification (Sibley’s Field Guide is recommended)!! Good Luck Everyone!
If you need spoilers click on the comments but I strongly suggest that you try to identify the bird first before moving down to see what answers have been given already. The person who commented could be wrong!! Most or all of these birds have been identified in the hand already and we know the answer (unless we say we don't know the answer).
Please note that we will not be updating this on a daily basis and started it because we thought would be fun to do. Please check out the main blog at "Mon@rch's Nature Blog" and "The Ovenbird"

According to All About Birds (http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Cedar_Waxwing_dtl.html), the one on the left is male, having a darker and larger chin patch.

I don’t know, but it looks like they’re sporting different styles of sunglasses!

Ditto
They sure are pretty birds. They look really in style wearing those cool shades.

I think it’s great that you were able to capture a shot of these two for comparison like this.
I’m going to guess the same as everyone else: male on left and female on right.

I think the male is the one in the left as we look at the photo, the female on the right.

the more I visit your site the more I learn.
Thanks for the effort you put into the page.

I’d go for the male on the left on the basis of the more defined underthroat patch. Or it could be the Blues Brothers.

I love the Cedars
I have them visit my crab apples every
Spring.
As far as I know..the male and female are
the same..

male..
Made me learn something !!

I think the one on the left, with the bigger bib, more extensive chest colouring and prominant head-crest, and straighter fuller dark brow.

I believe the male is on the left due to deeper coloring on the chest.
Both are beautiful!

love the photo…who put the sunglasses on those birds?

I think the one on the left is the male. His bib is larger and his coloring is more bold compared to the bird on the right.

Thanks for introducing me to a new bird I’d never seen before. Your pics are awesome.

The one wearing the aviators must be the male.
