birdQUIZ

I do these birdQUIZ’s to help teach your brain to look for some distinct field marks that will help you quickly identify the bird you are looking at. This is a perfect example of one of those birds who’s field marks are hidden, so you will be required to look for other clues in making its proper identification!

I’m really a newbie at bird identification but the fact he is clinging to the side of a tree and has a white belly I’m guessing it’s a White-breasted Nuthatch? Oh, I just noticed I must be right because I see Marg signed her’s WBNU. Wait, that’s a U on the end. What would that stand for? Maybe I’m not right.

I don’t think it would be fair if i guessed!

It probably wasn’t fair I guessed either ;)

Thanks everyone . . I want others to have the option to guess before giving the answer! Marg . . . I am glad you did give this bird a try! Although, what I think YNJ was talking about was the fact that I have already given him the answer on what the bird is!

I’ll come in at the end, after everyone including the “teacher” has identified the bird, and chirp: “white breasted nuthatch” eagerly :)

I knew this little guy because I studied it on Monarch’s site. Love the shot!! so far, I’ve only seen one in my backyard, wayyyyy up in the tree, and I’ve discovered the western ones must be so much more shy then the eastern ones! Beautiful shot! Great game!

I’m English and only really know English birds though I have visited the States and watched birds through the kitchen window in N.J.

So I couldn’t say what kind of nuthatch it is, but it looks like a nuthatch of some kind.

Or perhaps it is a reed bittern with plumage colour problems and the photo is turned sideways :)

My guess is White-breasted Nuthatch too, though I don’t see what field mark(s) is/are not visible.

    Linda in Erie: W=White; B=breasted; NU=Nuthatch. :-)

Thanks everyone for all your comments! I don’t think that I can pretend this is anything but what you all believe is a White-breasted Nuthatch.

Yes, you are right for this being a White-breasted Nuthatch! Great job everyone!

    I guessed a White-breasted Nuthatch, as well.

I got this one. I didn’t know you had a bird quiz blog. This is great!
